The Today Show

Broadcasting since it first aired in 1952, NBC’s “The Today Show” starts millions of days across the country. As the first of its genre, The Today Show was looking for an updated look for its website. Happy Cog was honored to be asked to provide it.

Taking its cues from The Today Show’s branding, Happy Cog incorporated assets from the broadcast video package, working intro and outro graphics into the design in a way that complemented, rather than competed with, their editorial content. Subtle transparencies and an attention to typographic detail completed the effect, allowing the final pages to present high amounts of information without feeling overcrowded or dense.

The design phase led to a successful, ambitious development project, in which Happy Cog built a single template that could effectively frame the thousands of pages served by The Today Show’s website. To that end, Happy Cog built an extensible XHTML/CSS module library, ensuring that NBC’s engineers could quickly and easily propagate the new design across their expansive site.

While the site has since redesigned, the Happy Cog-designed site remained the face of this venerable program for nearly three years.
