We in the web design industry like to talk about websites in terms of “storytelling” or “experience.” It feels a little high-handed to describe our design of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) website in those terms, in comparison and deference to the emotional depths plumbed by the physical exhibits. In comparison, the site is, more rightly, a supplement; a “living memorial” built from the same stuff as the physical space, which weaves together a moving and cautionary story about not only the holocaust, but ongoing genocide and ethnic persecution.
